Got the Munchies? Simple, Fast, and Really Good

Since I started coaching people on lifestyle changes, I have noted that almost every person I talk with has challenges, not only with ditching the fries for the broccoli (not that I ever suggest that...I believe you can have the fries and the broccoli) but the challenge comes when they get the munchies at 9pm.  What to eat, what to eat? It gets so desperate that they finally succumb to the call of the Doritos they hid in the back of the cub board.

Because of this, and the simple and most self-serving fact that I suffer the same 9pm desperation, I strongly suggest a list of healthy snack options (kinda like a menu plan of snacks) that you will always have on hand (and that won't take forever to make). The following is one of my favorite snacks that only takes 10 minutes from start to finish...I timed it!

Homemade Guacamole with Baked Tortilla Chips

Ingredients:    (large serving for one; small serving for two)
1 avocado
1 Roma Tomato (or any tomato will do - these are less watery)
1 Tortilla (or wrap)
First empty one avocado into a bowl and add your diced Roma Tomato. Mix it up with a fork and add a bit of lemon juice if you have some handy (it helps to hold off the turning of the avocado...it turns brownish grey after a while).  Pretty nice looking, eh?

Next, take one tortilla (a.k.a. a wrap) and cut it in triangles. Spritz on a little canola oil if you have it and sprinkle your favorite flavors (i.e. salt, parm cheese, etc.). Place in the oven at about 350 - 375 or on broil (but you have to really watch it or else you may burn them). Watch them for about 5 minutes until they are brownish around the edges.

There you have it. One toasted wrap (about 170 cals) with homemade guacamole and tomato (I'm not noting the calories because these are fruits). What a healthy snack...that tastes like something you would order at the pub.

This takes only 10 minutes and it is a healthier option than chips (and a lot less fat). Although avocado is high in fat, it is a healthy fat and one that is highly recommended in a healthy, balanced diet. It helps to keep you feeling full longer and you also get that "smooth mouth" feel that you get from fats. For those emotional eaters or munchers out there....I highly recommend that you put this one on your "Healthy Junk Food" list!

Have a great weekend.
